This is the website of the CHERLA research project, financed by the European Union to perform studies in cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill.) with the participation of 9 research groups of 6 different countries (Austria, Belgium, Spain, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru) and an international organization. The cherimoya is a subtropical fruit tree originated in the Andean region. The fruit presents excellent organoleptic qualities and nutritional values.
The main objective of CHERLA is the promotion of sustainable cherimoya cultivation in three Andean countries (Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru), based on the characterization, conservation and use of local genetic resources. These objectives will allow preserving the genetic diversity of this underutilized fruit species implementing, at the same time, sustainable production strategies to have a real impact on the end-users, the Andean farmers.
